JEAN PAUL GAULTIER
JEAN PAUL GAULTIER
Until August 3th 2015 National Galeries Grand Palais Paris
The retrospective gather 175 haute couture and ready-to-wear pieces created between 1976 and 2014, sketches, film extracts, fashion shows and concerts, illustrations of his multiple artistic collaborations.
The exhibition celebrates the daring, the creative diversity of the designer, explores his sources of inspiration in which humor, impertinence are next to the know-how of exception of the fashion art crafts.
An attractive setting in light of the diversity of details in the materials and their assemblies: trompe l’oeil, lacing-up, lace, leather, denim … his free and tolerant view, opened on the differences and the mixing of cultural references which never allows himself to be closed in established codes.
It includes the iconic pieces of the “enfant terrible” of fashion: sailor blouses, corsets, masculine skirts … orchestrated by a creative scenography where models come to life by the projection game on faces, with the Catherine Deneuve’s voice over during the reconstruction of a fashion show.
The exhibition also leaves room for fashion photography through superb prints of renowned contemporary photographers: Andy Warhol, Peter Lindbergh, Pierre et Gilles, Richard Avedon, Cindy Sherman …
